If this is your first time on the site, do not start with the newest page. Start with the shape of the county: four towns on a single north-south road, about twenty miles between the ends, and everything worth seeing set back from that road by a few minutes of driving. Read in the order below and nothing will feel out of place, because each page assumes you already know which town you are standing in.
The shape of the county
Rensselaer is the county seat in the middle, with the courthouse square, the welcome center and the widest choice of food. DeMotte sits about twenty miles north on US 231, Remington twelve miles south at the junction with US 24, and Wheatfield lies out to the north between them. One drive connects all four, and the countryside in between is farms, ditches and oak savanna that make the county look smaller on a map than it feels on the ground.
Read the Things to Do page first, because it sorts the year into fairs, markets, murals and trails and tells you which of them are likely to fall on your weekend. From there, take the branch that matches your dates.
If you have one day
Go straight to the two-day itinerary and cut the second morning out of it. That plan already assumes you will not see all four towns in the first three hours, and the same page works as a single day if you keep the Saturday loop and drop the Sunday.
Eat where you park. The Where to Eat page runs town by town with the diners, grills and bakeries, and it marks the places that close between lunch and dinner, which is the detail that ruins more visits here than any other.
If you came for the outside
Take the trails and preserves page for the level prairie walks, the farm trail for a driving day with stops, and the mural tour when the weather turns. Two preserves and one town is a full day. Four preserves is a checklist, and a bad one, because the pleasure here comes from slowing down enough to notice what is moving in the grass.
Check the seasonal events page for the week you are coming as well, since the county calendar fills with church suppers, parades and markets that are announced locally and fill locally.
Before you set out
The Jasper County FAQ covers drive times from Chicago, Central Time, cash, phone signal and opening hours, and it answers the questions that cost people a wasted trip. Confirm anything time-sensitive at the welcome center counter before you drive out to it, then leave the rest of the day open.
