Discover Jasper County covers four small towns in Northwest Indiana - Rensselaer, DeMotte, Remington and Wheatfield - and the farmland, preserves and county roads between them. It is written by three people who live within a short drive of what they write about, and it runs on one rule: a page does not go up until somebody has driven the route, checked the hours and paid for the meal. The county is flat, compact and mostly unbothered, and it rewards visitors who arrive with a plan loose enough to survive a closed kitchen.
Who writes it
Mia Contreras came out from Chicago and now spends most weekends she can get here. She writes the pages that answer the questions a first-time visitor from the city actually asks: how long the drive takes, what a room costs, where the gas pumps take cards after nine, and why a main street empties by six in the evening. She compares county prices with city prices honestly, in both directions.
Dana Whitlock lives in Rensselaer and writes the county from the driver's seat of its back roads. She knows which kitchens close between lunch and dinner, which Saturday brings a market, which Thursday keeps the shops open late, and how long it takes to walk the courthouse square twice. Her pages carry distances, opening hours and parking, because those are the things she checks herself before publishing them.
Roy Baxter has fished the county's water and plowed its roads for decades and writes about seasons, ice, conditions and the wildlife area in the north of the county. He gives conditions rather than opinions, and he is the reason this site will tell you when a gate is locked.
How a page gets written
First somebody drives it. Then the hours, prices and road names are checked against what is printed on the door or the sign rather than against an older article. Meals are paid for, rooms are priced in the season being described, and any number that could change - a license fee, a market time, a gate schedule - carries the month it was checked.
When a place closes for the season or moves, the page changes. Corrections from readers arrive through the contact page and go in before anything else, because a wrong hour costs somebody a two-hour drive across the county for nothing.
What we do not do
There are no paid placements on this site and no room bookings that pay us a commission. When a stop is worth the drive we say so and give the reason; when it closes on Monday we say that as well. The county has enough on its own without brochure language, and a visitor who arrives with the wrong expectation is exactly the person this site exists for.
Where to start
If this is your first visit, the Start Here page gives the shortest route through everything: the county overview, a two-day plan, where to eat, and the practical questions about hours, cash and phone signal. The rest of the site splits by town and by season, so you can read the piece that matches the weekend you actually have rather than the one you wish you had.
